Scripture: Obadiah 1:12 (NKJV)
“But you should not have gazed on the day of your brother in the day of his captivity…”
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to become a spectator?
The Book of Obadiah addresses a painful moment in Israel’s history. When Jerusalem was under attack, and God’s people were suffering, their neighbors, the Edomites, stood by and watched. Instead of offering help, they observed from a distance. Instead of showing compassion, they found satisfaction in another’s misfortune.
God rebuked them, not simply because they saw the tragedy, but because they allowed themselves to become comfortable watching it.
The message remains relevant today.
In a world where we can witness heartbreak, failure, disappointment, and suffering with the swipe of a finger, God calls us to something greater than observation. He calls us to compassion. He calls us to pray for one another, encourage one another, and bear one another’s burdens.
The question is not whether we will see people struggling. The question is how we will respond when we do.
Will we stand at a distance?
Or will we become instruments of God’s grace?
Today, ask God to give you eyes that see beyond the problem and a heart willing to help where you can.
Reflection
How do I respond when I see others experiencing difficulty, failure, or loss?
Prayer
Lord, help me respond to others’ struggles with compassion rather than indifference. Teach me to reflect Your love, offer encouragement, and be a source of hope to those who are hurting. Amen.
